Sexual Medicine

Sexual medicine embraces the physical and psychological study, diagnosis, and treatment of sexual concerns of men and women. It is a medical specialty that addresses all matters related to sexuality.

Why is Sexual Medicine Important?

In no other area of the human spectrum of wellness is there such an intricate connection between mind and body as is the case with sexual health. Sexuality plays a significant role in quality of life; sexual problems can cause both emotional and physical distress and interfere with relationships as well as enjoyment of every day living. How are Sexual Disorders Diagnosed?

The evaluation of a sexual disorder begins with a candid conversation regarding health history and lifestyle. Sexual satisfaction is discussed in depth as well as sexual function of the partner. Conditions that are commonly implicated in sexual dysfunction are investigated such as depression, anxiety, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and sexually transmitted infections. A thorough physical exam is completed to determine if there is any anatomical dysfunction contributing to the problem. Depending on symptoms, blood values of sex hormone may be obtained as well as vascular and neurological testing.

What Type of Treatments are Available for Sexual Problems?

The pillar of treatment for all sexual disorders is education for both the patient and partner. Additional treatment options vary widely and include bio-identical hormones to restore normal hormone function, botanical medicines, physical therapy to correct pelvic musculoskeletal dysfunction, biofeedback, couples counseling, intimacy training, reevaluation of medications with strong sexual side effects, and even surgery.
